The least understood of major wine producing
countries, Portugal clings tenaciously to its
centuries-old traditions....Indigenous red grape varieties used for table wines
include the esteemed Touriga Nacional of the Douro
and Dão, Baga in Bairrada, Castelão Frances, also called
Periquita, and Trincadeira in the Alentejo. Aragonez,
also known as Tinta Roriz, is Spain’s Tempranillo, and is
widely grown. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and particularly
Syrah are planted increasingly in regions such as
Dão, Alentejo and Ribatejo.
