South Africa is the only major wine producing country other than France known for its varietal Chenin Blanc, sometimes called “Steen” locally. The variety has long been valued for its ability to produce enormouslyhigh yields of technically correct wine. A few wineries, however, make more interesting examples, but they remain an oddity on the North American market. Much more enthusiastically received have been the expressive wines made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
