River that lends its name to one of the most picturesque as well as productive wine regions in France. Most of the Rhône’s southern journey takes it through hot and dry country, and because the grapes receive a maximum amount of sun, vintages vary less than in many other fine French wine regions. The wines tend to be full-flavored: Reds are robust and alcoholic and the best need time to mature. As could be predicted for such a warm region, the whites are less important, just 4 percent of production. They tend to be full-bodied, floral and have a lush texture from lowish acidity. The lively, stylish rosés are among the best in France.
